US Embassy in Vientiane, Laos

This morning my art piece This and That was picked up to travel to Vientiane, Laos.
It will hang for several years in the US Embassy. This has been in the works for several months, documents were exchanged and signed. But now it has been picked up and it looks so final because it will travel so far. Feelings emerge like dropping of your kid at college. But this time I am not there. So I am releasing my artwork and hope that it will bring joy to the people who will see it. It was certainly fun weaving it with all the plastic wrappers from newspapers. And it is fun to think that a part of our San Antonio community (who supplied so many of the plastic wrappers) will be seen in Vientiane.

Some of my framed pieces at the Copper Kitchen at the SSA

The Southwest School of Art in San Antonio TX, has a beautiful little lunch place, called the Copper Kitchen. For the past 2 months some of my framed artwork has been hanging there. At first I wondered how my weavings with colorful plastic bags and caution tape would look in the historic setting - but it works.

What's up with me

I really haven't posted lately but lots of things are going on.
I started this summer with a new series on the big loom at SSA.
Here is a snippet of my third piece which is about Global Warming:
yes everybody is affected and we will have to work together.

My next piece I am not sure what it will be called but I over dyed some yellow cotton warp.
Love the colorful outcome - Nature

.............and last but not least  - another piece on my loom at home
which will be felted when taken off:

Outcome from my Shibori ice dyeing

It was supposed to be black but actually there are many colors in this piece. I decided to make myself a saori vest from it and stitch the back. So here it is.
Like always - cityscape.

Shibori Ice Dyeing

This past Sunday I washed my woven fabric to get the seizing out. It dried and tonight I pulled the fabric together and knotted the ends. It took quiet  sometime.
Then I soaked the fabric in soda ash.

Afterwards I left it in a large container, filled it with ice.

I mixed salt and "new black" in a ziplock bag" and sprinkled it over the ice.

Now it has to sit for 24 hrs in the bucket and then it will be washed out.
More about that in the next couple of days.

Wove fabric for Shibori dyeing

I simply wove on an 8 harness loom some fabric, 32 inches wide x 2+ yards long. It is cotton boucle as warp and very shiny rayon as weft. The blue strings are the ones to pull together to get the pattern. Stay tuned for the next step next week.
